چکیده

Introduction ١ Biomaterials Biomaterials are used to make devices to replace a part or a function of the body in safe, reliably economically, and physiologically acceptable manner. A variety of devices and materials are used in the treatment of disease or injury. Commonplace examples include suture needles, plates, teeth fillings, etc. Biomaterial: A synthetic material used to make devices to replace part of a living system or to function in intimate contact with living tissue. Biological Material: A material that is produced by a biological system. Bio-compatibility: Acceptance of an artificial implant by the surrounding tissues and by the body as a whole.

Biopolymers as Wound Healing Materials: Challenges and New Strategies

Wound healing is a multi-factorial physiological process. The complexity of this phenomenon makes it prone to several abnormalities. Apart from cellular and biochemical components, several enzymatic pathways also become active during repair and help the tissue to heal. The goal of this chapter is to introduce the biomaterials community to the emerging field of self-healing materials, and also t...

Multiscale Explanation of Elasticity and Strength of Bone and Bone Replacement Materials Made of Hydroxyapatite, Glass-ceramics, or Titanium: a Continuum Micromechanics Approach

Bone is a hierarchically organized material, characterized by an astonishing variability and diversity. Bone replacement or biomaterials are critical components in artificial organs, and they are also used as scaffolds in tissue engineering. The aim of this thesis is the prediction of the strength of bone and bone replacement materials, from their composition and microstructure, by means of mul...

Quantitative Histopathology for Evaluation of In Vivo Biocompatibility Associated with Biomedical Implants

In the current chapter, digital morphometric analysis (DMA) was used to quantify two markers of biocompatibility around commonly used biomaterials. In the field of biomaterial evaluation for biocompatibility, more sophisticated methods are now being used to precisely characterize the elicited response from the surrounding tissue towards the implanted material. One reason for this is due to the ...
